Abstract

Carbon emission reduction requires instruments that not only address environmental objectives but also provide economic incentives for economic actors. One instrument that has developed in Indonesia is the carbon market, which connects emission reduction activities with trading mechanisms and economic benefits. This study aims to analyze the role of the carbon market as an economic instrument in supporting carbon emission reduction in Indonesia. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method using a literature review approach. Data were obtained from seven relevant scientific articles published between 2016 and 2024 discussing carbon markets, carbon trading, carbon policy, institutional aspects, and the economic impacts of carbon markets. The analysis was conducted by identifying, grouping, comparing, and synthesizing findings according to the research themes. The results indicate that carbon markets can provide economic incentives for emission reduction activities, encourage changes in the behavior of economic actors, generate potential state revenue, and promote more environmentally friendly energy use. At the corporate level, carbon markets may affect costs, operational decisions, technology investment, and emission management. However, implementation in Indonesia still faces challenges related to regulatory clarity, trading mechanisms, the readiness of economic actors, and institutional capacity. Therefore, carbon market development requires clear regulation, transparency, actor readiness, and stronger inter-institutional coordination.
