Abstract
This study aimed to describe the speed reading ability of drama texts using the SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review) technique among Grade XI Phase F9 students of SMA Negeri 5 Padang. The study employed a quantitative approach with a descriptive method. The sample consisted of 25 students of Grade XI F9. The instrument was a speed-reading test using the 1,500-word drama text “Habislah Gelap Terbitlah Terang” by R.A. Kartini and an objective reading-comprehension test. Data were analyzed based on reading speed in words per minute (WPM), comprehension level, and overall reading ability combining speed and comprehension. The results showed that students’ reading speed ranged from 91 to 187 WPM, with a mean of 136.28 WPM. Reading comprehension ranged from 84 to 100, with a mean of 95.04. Overall reading ability ranged from 83 to 172 WPM, with a mean of 129.12 WPM. The highest overall reading ability, 172 WPM, was still below the 250 WPM ideal standard for senior high school students used in this study. Therefore, the findings indicate that the application of the SQ3R technique had not yet provided adequate contribution to students’ speed reading ability of drama texts. More intensive speed-reading practice and more appropriate instructional techniques and media are therefore needed.
