From Comparative Advantage to Global Competitiveness: An Analysis of the Transformation of Indonesia’s Exports in International Trade
Main Article Content
Abstract
International trade is an important factor in promoting economic growth through export expansion, market diversification, and the utilization of a country’s comparative advantages. Indonesia possesses abundant natural resources and production capacity, which provide a strong foundation for absolute and comparative advantages in international trade. However, comparative advantage based primarily on resource availability does not automatically translate into strong and sustainable global competitiveness. This study aims to analyze the transformation of Indonesia’s exports from comparative advantage toward global competitiveness using a descriptive qualitative approach based on secondary data. The data were obtained from the Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the World Trade Organization (WTO), UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the World Bank, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and relevant previous studies. The analysis focuses on export structure, revealed comparative advantage, downstreaming policies, and changes in export value added. The findings indicate that Indonesia maintains strong comparative advantages in several natural resource-based commodities. However, the development of sustainable global competitiveness increasingly depends on the country’s ability to enhance value added, technology, productivity, market diversification, and integration into global value chains. The downstreaming policy, particularly in the nickel sector, demonstrates a shift from the export of raw materials toward higher value-added processed products. Nevertheless, Indonesia continues to face challenges related to commodity dependence, market concentration, technological capabilities, and sustainability requirements. Therefore, strengthening Indonesia’s global competitiveness requires an integrated strategy that combines existing comparative advantages with improvements in productivity, technological capabilities, innovation, and domestic value creation.
