Abstract

Dutch colonialism in Jambi brought changes to the political and social life of the local community. The expansion of colonial power contributed to the emergence of various forms of resistance, including the struggle led by Raden Mattaher in the early twentieth century. This study aims to analyze the sociological response of the Jambi community to colonialism in the context of Raden Mattaher's resistance. This research employs a literature review method by examining historical books, scholarly journals, theses, conference proceedings, and other relevant written sources. The data were analyzed through source selection, source criticism, interpretation, and historical analysis. The findings indicate that the Jambi community's response to colonialism can be observed through the involvement of several local leaders and community groups in the resistance, the existence of followers around resistance leaders, relationships between local leaders and the community, and cooperation in confronting colonial power. Therefore, Raden Mattaher's resistance cannot be understood solely as the struggle of an individual leader against Dutch colonial rule, but also as part of a social process involving relationships among resistance leaders, community groups, and colonial power structures. Colonial conditions, local leadership networks, relationships with the Jambi Sultanate, and forms of cooperation among groups are important aspects in understanding the community's response to colonialism.
