Regional Economic Integration
Main Article Content
Abstract
Regional economic integration is an important form of cooperation among countries to reduce trade barriers, expand market access, increase investment opportunities, and strengthen regional economic competitiveness. This study aims to analyze the forms and development of regional economic integration, particularly in the ASEAN region, as well as the opportunities and challenges it creates for Indonesia. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach through literature study and secondary data analysis. Data were obtained from relevant scientific articles, ASEAN publications, and reports from international and national institutions discussing regional economic integration, international trade, ASEAN, and Indonesia. The results show that regional economic integration develops through several stages, ranging from preferential trade arrangements and free trade areas to customs unions, common markets, economic unions, and political unions. In ASEAN, the development of AFTA and the ASEAN Economic Community has strengthened regional trade and economic connectivity. Recent ASEAN data indicate that intra-ASEAN trade accounted for 21.5% of the region's total trade, demonstrating the importance of regional markets in ASEAN economic integration. For Indonesia, regional integration provides opportunities to expand export markets, attract investment, and increase business competitiveness. However, Indonesia also faces challenges in the form of stronger competition, differences in economic capacity, non-tariff barriers, and the need to improve human resources, infrastructure, technology, and domestic industrial competitiveness. Therefore, strengthening competitiveness and economic capacity is important for Indonesia to obtain greater benefits from regional economic integration.
